Do I Have A Mental Disorder?

This Question From Psychiatry Jokes | 15 Answers

QUESTION:

Here are some signs I display often.
1. My mood/behavior/fashion sense change as I listen to certain music, or watch certain television shows. (For instance, if I’m listening to goth/industrial music I dress all dark and am only attracted to goth guys. But if I listen to country, I start dressing more cowgirl and am attracted to southerners. My fashion teacher said this was strange…)
2. I’ll remember doing something, but not meaning to. Like, I’d say something really mean to a friend, but I wouldn’t mean it to be mean… then I instantly regret having said anything. I sometimes vaguely remember doing things that upset other people. I’ll act a certain way and disclose too much, and I’ll forget I did so until someone brings it up and I get incredibly embarrassed of it.
3. I can be incredibly mad at someone for one minute, and then love them like no other. I have a really bad temper, but it doesn’t last long, I switch to my sweet old self in no time. The way I react to situations is strange… My friend could have stabbed me in the back and a day later I forgive her, probably because I forgot the velocity of how bad she stabbed me…
4. At night, I’ve noticed most of the things I do arn’t concious. I’d be talking to a person, and the next day when I look back at the conversation, I get petrified because it isn’t what I had intended to say or come across as. (EX: If i’m talking to a guy at night, things tend to get really hypersexual, and the next day I GET FREAKED OUT when I reread everything we had said to each other. It’s like it wasn’t even me at all, but I remember doing it VAGUELY. But at least I remember it, or wouldn’t that be schitzophrenia or something?)
5. I can read people’s body language incredibly well and am able to distinguish what they mean by their actions (Mostly due to paranoia), but I don’t know how what I say or do affects people until after I do so. I spontaneously do and say things without thinking, and it takes me a long time to realize what I just did was really bad.
6. I can sit/stare at something for an incredibly long time. I’ll be at school, and just go into this strange catatonic state and my brain would go blank, and my head will kind of, tilt to one side like I’m analyzing something, but I’m not.
7. I’m a really shy person, but I find it easy to talk to people, although, I don’t consider myself one of ‘them’. I’m really fake to people, like sugar coat everything fake. I’m so nice, people feel that they can walk all over me. No, I don’t mean to be fake, but it’s just my personality, it feels fake, just because I don’t want to be mean. What I’m really thinking is totally opposite. most of the time, I just want to sock someone’s face in.
8. I’m always paranoid that people are out to get me. If a person doesn’t return my text, I hate them with a fiery passion. I think they just read the text and decided not to respond, instead of taking into consideration that something had gotten in the way of doing so. I feel like people are always trying to piss me off on purpose.
I know this is long, but I never knew where to ask for help. My parents don’t believe there is anything wrong with me, they’re really traditional and think going to psychiatry will ruin our family name, even though my family has a long line of wackadoodles. I just hope I’m not on that path?
HELP :( ((((( (this is not a joke, btw, if it sounds like that?)

It would be great if you could talk to a counselor at school. Tell them everything you put down here. I think you are ok just growing up. Good luck:)

    No. You’re a teenager.

You really need to see a doctor to see if it manic depression or something else.

  6. twstdspi on November 3, 2009 5:19 am

maybe Bipolar or something, but you seem normal to me.

It seems you have a slight tendency to be bipolar.
    Don’t worry though.

No, you’re not. But it is possible that the family history has made you extremely self-aware, which is why you are constantly ‘watching’ yourself. You don’t say how old you are, a lot of your impatience with people (points 7 and 8) might simply be down to your age.
Sweetheart, every family has its fair share of wackadoodles (what I lovely word), so I wouldn’t worry too much about this.

Honestly, you sound perfectly normal, if a bit teenaged. Your problem is that you are way too conscious of every little thing you do, and you seem to think it only happens to you. I know lots of normal people who have every “symptom” you’ve listed.
Have you considered that they aren’t symptoms of anything?

Sound a bit like Bi Polar disorder but you must be checked out and that mean a complete psychiatric analysis which takes a few visits at minimum. No one can diagnose you in one visit or based on a checklist of symptoms filled out by you.
The second thing you should do is separate yourself from all music and TV . You need to discover who you are and not be manipulated by music and TV that affects your brain as if you are hypnotized.

I’d say yes, you defiantly have Bipolar Disorder. It is one of the hardest disorders to get medicine for. Dr’s will tell you over and over “it’s just depression” or “it’s only an anxiety attack” Talk to your Dr and no matter how crazy/off/bad you feel, you have to be as open as possible. That’s the only way to get a true diagnosis.

I suspect that, as well as these bandwagon jumping fools, you too suspect you have Bipolar Disorder because of your use of the word Hypersexual. However, as I must keep pointing out on here, there is no Bipolar without a manic episode and having a short fuse does not count. You are normal, my dear, but there can be no harm in chatting to a counsellor if you think it will help.

Most likely not. The fact that you’re able to recognize these symptoms kinda goes against the idea of you having a condition – rarely can someone with psychosis diagnose themselves.
Of course it wouldn’t hurt to talk to a psychiatrist. I mean, Yahoo Answers is all very well and good but you’re not going to find a qualified psychiatrist talking to you on here.

In my opinion, if you are not a threat to yourself or others, you do not have a mental disorder. You said you contemplate suicide, and if that is seriously the case, the seek help. When I thought about suicide I sought help.
I am pretty sure I am “mentally disordered”. I am not really shy but I avoid social situations, and suffer from paranoia. I’ve had my share of social problems. Im 21 and haven’t had a gf in 7 years. But thats my fault. I have to accept it. Life is hard, and challenging- you don’t need to pop a pill every time you feel down- being down is part of life. I find things I like to do, and if i get depressed or anxious when thinking about myself, which I do, then I go for a run, workout, do something to take my mind off of it and at the same time show myself I am capable of more that worry and doubt. Everyone in the world goes through hard times, and no one is perfect.
