Do You Believe Psychiatry Is A Joke/scam?

This Question From Psychiatry Jokes | 5 Answers

Every single psychiatric diagnosis, from dysthymia to paranoid schizophrenia, is a subjective diagnosis made on the basis of behaviors alone. There is no definitive, objective blood test for any mental disorder, and there never will be, because mental disorders are not purely biological, chemical, or physical. Mental disorders arise not just due to biological factors but also social and psychological factors, making it impossible to reduce to a single hypothetical lesion in the brain, akin to a disease. If mental disorders could be reduced in such a way, they would be bona fide diseases; however, they can never be reduced to biological factors and will always remain in a distinct category from physical diseases.
This is not to say that people don’t have emotional problems, even severe emotional problems, or frank psychosis. Biological psychiatry insists that mental disorders are diseases, which is obvious bunk to anyone who thinks for himself and doesn’t listen to the talking points of Big Pharma. The impetus for claiming that emotional problems constitute diseases is to convince the public that they are primarily medical problems requiring drugs. However, in anesthetizing one’s brain, unpleasant feelings are only masked and the core psychosocial problem is never dealt with, ordinary problems in living deemed “irrelevant” by the “cutting edge” pseudoscience of psychiatry.
So long as we have a society of haves and have-nots, we’re going to see severe emotional problems in the have-nots, such as schizophrenia, which is disproportionately a disorder of the lower classes. So long as we remain addicted to big expensive stuff and worship at the alter of the mighty dollar, we’re going to find upper middle class suburbanites depressed over how they don’t have the newest, neatest gadget that the Joneses just got. Maybe we’d have a bit more of a rewarding community to promote our mental health if we didn’t hide away in our big box houses and big box cars all the time.
So long as psychiatry bills itself a branch of medicine, and claims that emotional problems are purely biological, and gives drugs to people in distress instead of helping them to better cope with the world, then yes, psychiatry is a joke/scam.

    No, I do not believe psychiatry is a joke. Psychiatry can be very important when used in the correct way. Psychiatrists often get a bad rep because their main job is prescribing medications. This is not as bad as most people believe it to be. I will admit that some things may be a bit over prescribed. But in the long run psychiatry is a good thing. Now the prescribing of the medications will not work if the patient does not take or take it as prescribed. The other side to this is most will not prescribe without the patient going to see a psychologists for therapy as well. Medications prescribed will not work 100 % alone. It usually always works the best when used in combination of therapy with a psychologist.

    No it’s not a scam but that also doesn’t mean that it will work for everyone.
    It depends on 2 things; The psychiatrist and The person…
    Some psychiatrists SUCK and some are great and if you talk to the great one’s patients, youll see that some will say that psychiatry litearlly saved their lives while others will say that it didn’t help at ALL.
    The same concept goes for psychology. It’s impossible for psychiatry to be a scam because it makes completely logical sense;
    There are many people out there with mental issues and out of those people, there are a lot of them that the cause of it is due to a chemical imbalance in their brain (the most common being low levels of serotonin). A psychiatrist can prescribe medications that attempt to balance the chemicals out back to normal (the most common being SSRIs which increase the level of serotinin by blocking the reuptake of it). So for the people that DO have something chemically wrong, it makes complete sense. For those who don’t, they are out of luck and get sent to a psychologist so they can “talk” about issues instead in attempt to work them out (which doesn’t work for everyone).
    So no, it’s definitely NOT a joke or scam… but it definitely doesn’t work for everyone either~

    No, it is there for those who legitimately need help, but the clientele is full of teenagers who are going through perfectly normal changes. So it may seem like BS to someone without a mental imbalance.
    It is extremely useful and life changing, not everyone has a friend to talk to,
    Not every problem can be solved with talking, medication is necessary in few, but i disagree with the widespread medications to numb our youth.
