Drama With A Stray Dog Please Help!?

This Question From Veterinarian Jokes | 14 Answers

Very early this morning, someone drove down the street, beeped a few times, and dumped a dog out of the car in pretty much the middle of the woods. Since he was freezing and pretty skinny, I fed him and tried to help him out a bit until I could get in touch with the shelter. He will not leave my porch/deck and has been standing outside barking for the past 8 hours to get into the house. This is a strange dog and I have a 5 month old baby, so letting him in is not an option. Humane society is closed for the holiday weekend, animal control is also not operating, veterinarians are not in, even the ER vet said there’s nothing they can do, and the police could only give me the phone numbers I had already tried. This dog needs shelter NOW (it’s sleeting and snowing). I tried to put him in the barn overnight but he keeps coming back to the house. And we really need peace from the barking! Any ideas? No jokes, please. I really need serious ideas.

Do you have a basement or a garage he could stay in? A neighbor, firend or family member without children who would be willing to help? The poor dog is totally bewildered about his situation, and you have been kind to him, possibly the first one ever to be kind to him, so he’s looking to you for help. I can imagine his barking is unnerving for you. Is there a boarding kennel near you that might house him for a night or two? If not for free, then for a discount? Maybe if you can tie him in the barn he’ll quiet down and stay there. You are kind to try to help. Good luck.

Do you have a spare bedroom? A laundry room? Or Basement he could stay? If you do I would just keep your baby in his room with the door shut, then bring the dog to your spare bed room with food, water, and blanket and close the door. If you can’t do that, then I would ask the neighbors if they would take the dog in until the Shelter opens. If my neighbor came to me with a stray dog that needed shelter I would take it in. So hopefully one of your neighbors would help out as well.
**It sounds like your only option will be to tie him up in the barn, or call friends and neighbors and ask if one of them can help. I’m sure someone has a spare room for this poor dog, I know I would take in a stray if someone asked me to.

no matter what they have emergency animal control people on call! they can still come and get that dog…either that or keep it…build him some sort of shelter on your porch or if u have a garage put him in your garage

Can you shut the barn door? There really isn’t any other option unless there is some kind of boarding facility that is open, you’d have to pay to board him for a few days/nights until the shelter opens. You can’t let him freeze, do you have a neighbor or someone who can let him in?

Take to the animal to the shelter in the morning. Do you have a stall for the dog, what about closeing the dog in a horse stall or tackroom with water&small amount of food?

So what exactly is it you want us to tell you?

Well, you could get the dog a muzzle. I know that you don’t want a stray dog in the house, but if you corner off a part of like a part of your house that’s untidy, then you could keep the dog inside over there. It would probably be happier there. You can also try finding a family owned or small animal rescue place to leave the dog. I really have nothing else to tell you, but if I were you, I would keep the dog. You should go to the vet fairly soon. We had a cat come like that. She just kept coming back for food, so my mom took her to the vet for shots. The dog might already have shots though. If he looks fairly old or really friendly, he has a pretty good chance of already having had shots, so you really don’t need to worry about having him in the house.

Do you have an extra room that you could keep him in like a bathroom or laundry room? Try and do that until the places open up again.

Maybe if you put something more for him to eat in the barn and then something chewy (a steak bone or something similar) to keep him there awhile. Plus a bowl of water since he might be very thirsty. I can’t think of anything else to keep him in the barn unless you have a long leash perhaps and are willing to get that close. Perhaps a boarding kennel would be willing to take him in just for the holidays at a reduced price. Either way, good luck!

can you bring him, and block him off in one room? Otherwise, just earplugs.

If there is absolutely nowhere he can stay (garage, basement, etc..) could you try using a lead to tie him in the barn? At least then he’ll be a little warmer. Good luck!

Can you put him in a separate room from the baby? (Bathroom, extra bedroom…)
Erm.. Hmm… Sorry! I really can’t think of anything else…!
