This Question From Psychiatry Jokes | 22 Answers
Scientology calls psychiatry a pseudoscience, and preaches of the evils of psychiatric drugs, while denying the good that certain drugs do for severe mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, dementia, etc.. This is the main problem that I have with this (ahem) “religion”. I find that what they tell people to be harmful and uninformed. But some (such as Tom Cruise) believe that they have studied psychiatry and know more about the subject matter, than those of us who have been involved and around these illnesses most of our lives. I want to see Tom spend some time in a Psych ward with people with severe mental illnesses and treat them to a free handful of vitamins and an auditing session. What a Joke!

I was a therapist (and social worker) for 10 years…I diagnosed people with mental illnesses and obviously encountered many in my career. I was really dismayed at Tom Cruise putting down Brook Shields and other people who use anti-depressants.
Much mental illness is organically caused or influenced, this is just a fact. If the source is chemical, the help is chemical. Even if the cause is not organic, I have seen psych meds help many, many people. Who could not function or work to support themselves without meds.
Of course, that should be in addition to comprehensive therapy. When possible, because it is not always possible or realistic depending on the situation.
There is a backlash against drug companies–but some of the backlash is due to competitors who want to sell their *own* “cures.” And that is where Scientology comes in. They are trolling for new customers.
I feel they’re douchebags who don’t know what the hell they’re talking about.
I think it’s hilarious that those E-Meters have to have stickers on them that basically say “this machine doesn’t do crap.”
The problem is too many people get prescribed psychotropic drugs…sure severely mentally ill people might need them but not everyone who is temporarily down in the dumps…
Show me one person who has been healed by these life long drugs. The only one they help is doctors, hospitals and the multi- billion dollar pharmaceutical market.I would be all for it,if they helped in any way.A Christian who resides in the Prozac nation.
Scientology is trying to practice medicine without a valid license. Here is what their stance on psychiatry can lead to.
This is just one case.
Psychiatry is cheaper than Scientology.
One thing that Tom will never see is the inside of a psych unit. He won’t see the kids who come in suicidal, the older people suffering from the dementia that steals more and more from the people they once were, the schizophrenic or the bipolar. He won’t see the people who get better.
I do think we are still in the dark ages of psychiatry, but between psychiatry and scientology, I’ll put my money of psychiatry. Sorry, but any story that involves space aliens and body thetans gets me to giggling uncontrollably. Maybe that’s my specific mental disorder. I know there are people who would say the same about Christianity. But Christianity has survived for a much longer time, and as far as I know, it costs nothing to belong to, and salvation is free.
It’s totally insane but I think it’s because they are trying to drive out the competition. They want more people in scientology.
I doubt many scientologists understand how drugs works.
Scientology is a mental illness in itself. Its a made up religion by a FICTION writer, and yet people still believe. People are so gullible.
Scientology is a hoax the only people who care what they say are those who have been duped by them. Its a great religion for homosexuals and the rest of societies dregs.
I feel it’s stupid to even think people can cure themselves of a mental illness. They are religious nuts to me. Same as these people that think prayer alone can heal a person. Kooks.
I agree(what a joke) scientologist claim to know about mental illness when I believe they suffer from it.I had a chemical imbalance and had to take meds for anxiety attacks, and no amount of “auditing” was going to help.they say that you can be a christian and still be a scientologist, that is a lie,if you look at footage of their meetings you will see how they worship L.Ron.you can’t have two masters.you can’t worship Christ and L.Ron Hubbard.
BTW I don’t have to take the meds any more,so they did help.
I think they are completely insane, being as when I was 11 years old I took anti depressants, which worked wonders for me.
They probably have no idea how it is to be in that mental state and should not go running their mouths about something they haven’t experienced themselves.
The whole “religion” is a joke. Beam me up Scotty!!!!!!
That question is like asking how people feel about a 4yr old’s stance on the geopolitical ramification of gitmo.
I think it’s healthy to have some skepticism regarding our current pill-popping culture, however not because psychiatry is evil or any other such mystical reasons. I also am suspicious of any ideas that claim faith rather than scientific study is an answer to anything. And yes, there are people who suffer severe mental illness and can’t just ‘pray’ their problems away.
I am a psychiatric nurse.
Regardless of the validity of their beliefs, they have the legal right to refuse psychiatric care.
and frankly, nurses are so overworked that, if a few thousand wackos want to NOT come and give us more to do…we won’t complain.
I agree with you about Tom Cruise. I know many people, including myself, that psychiatry has helped tremendously.
How do you feel about Scientology’s stance against Psychiatry, and the use of psych. medicine? :
Put simply, it’s a complete nonsense. AND, for the record, I am a practicing scientologist (freezone).
Scientology is a useful as a spiritual practice. It is NOT a valid substitute for proper healthcare. To the extent that spiritual factors may underly an existing medical condition the practice of scientology can serve as a useful supplement to medical treatment but it should NEVER be used as a replacement.
The “reasons” for the Co$ position in re psychiatric treatment stem from medical practices that were common in the early part of the 20th century with regard to the diagnosis & treatment of the mentally ill, and also L.Ron Hubbard’s personal prejudices about such. These attitudes are not appropriate given the advances in medical care since that time.
Unfortunately the Co$ has yet to “come up to present time” on the matter.

I am a freezone scientologist. I am not affiliated with the Church of Scientology.
Freezone Scientology practices scientology independent of the church of scientology. Generally, they refer to themselves as “freezone” or “independent” scientologists. Freezoners are the “protestants” of the church of scientology.
It’s completely ridiculous. I know more about psychiatry than Tom Cruise and I’ve never formally studied it. It’s just another person claiming he knows about stuff he doesn’t know s**t about.
But you have to admit, Scientology is just as valid as any other religion out there.
I don’t agree with their stand on psychiatry.
Yes, just as in all areas of life, there are abuses in that field, but I think generally it really does more good than harm.
I think the main problem Scientology’s have with Psychiatry and Psychiatric drugs is the fear that it may make deluded people well enough to recognize a cult when they see one! I don’t have any problem with people worshipping as they wish, hence my new-found love for the FSM. However, I am smart enough to recognize the source of my new “friend” but the followers of Scientology chose to conveniently forget that it was conceived by a science fiction writer!
I think that says it all.
Have you ever read the C.P.S manual on these psychotropic drugs ?
they are worse then heroin ,,,,
I would not allow any doctor to push such drugs on me
It is a proven fact that these drugs do more harm then good
any one who I know that has taken these drugs has ended up in a worse state then when , they were off them
Doctors have tried to push drugs on me for my depression , I told them to stick their drugs up their @ss
On this issue I do agree with the Scientology’s stance on psychotropic drugs
In my view Pyscatrist are just licensed drug pushers
