READ the book at the end
Much pain is from muscles below is an example of what may help (based on headaches).
Begin with a couple swigs of molasses or a couple of bananas daily - magnesium (which regulates many things in the body) and potassium (a needed building block for muscles).
Drink at least 1/2 gallons of water per day. Running a body low on water is like running a car low on oil is the analogy the head of neurology at UCDavis told my husband about 10 years ago.
Now to the cause - muscles - your back, neck shoulders and head have tender spots. They are knots in the fibers of the muscles called trigger points. It makes the muscles tight which makes them press on nerves and other things causing the pain.
The cure - start with a professional massage, you will also want to go back over any place you can get to 6-12 times per session up to 6 times per day rubbing (or lightly scratching on your head) every where that is tender until the knots go away. The place where the skull connects to the spine press up under the edge of the skull (to get to those muscles).
For more information read The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Davies. It teaches what to do and where the pain comes from.

Be careful with the NSAIDS such as Advil as they take a toll on your kidneys and liver. Much of the alternative medicine is hooey. Chiropractors help to a degree because they spend time with you, more than a conventional Dr and the human contact is what makes you feel better. It is difficult except for one who is experiencing the hell of the chronic 7/24 agony of back pain to truly understand what you are going through. I for one do. Please rephrase your question. I know you are hurting. Its tough. Keep up with the hot packs, Hot water. A companion pet is good. My dogs cheer me up when everyone is out, Find a distraction you can work on. Keep your mind occupied on something other than your pain. Let your Pain Management Physician know the extent of your pain and whether your meds are working. Hang in there.

Gail, I am a professional massage therapist in San Francisco. I am sorry you are in so much pain. Here are some things that I know of that people have done with excellent results:
1) Try taking fish oil (Omega 3). This is a natural anti-inflammatory and I have seen great results with people who have soft tissue injuries. Obviously check with your doctor first.
2) Nucca is a gentle form of chiropractic that often works when everything else fails. http://www.nucca.org I have seen people get amazing results with this.
3) There is a doctor in New York, Dr. Sarno, who has written books about back pain. People have told me that they have gotten miracle results with this guy.
4) There is also a new book about anti-inflammatory foods that are supposed to help get rid of pain. It is The Inflammation Diet by Monica Rengold.
Good luck and feel better.

See if prolotherapy might help. Depends on the problem of course.http://www.prolotherapy.com/
I understand back pain. As of last week I am now out on permanent disability due to neck and back pain (drunk driver MVA), and on 24hr morphene.

I guess I really do not understand your question, other than you want some people to sympathize with you; which I do. Most of us are not medical professionals, so we would only be able to offer you small bits of advice for a hurting back; not something major.
Hope you have success with pain management.
