Should I Shave All My Pubic Hair For My Hysteroscopy Outpatient Surgery?

This Question From Surgery Jokes | 12 Answers

QUESTION:

I have a friend that’s a doctor and she said that when your under anesthesia they have little snicker sessions about pubic hair on people when they haven’t shaved for surgery. I’m not pregnant but she said pregnant women that don’t have this done ahead of time, well, they joke about that sometimes too.
So… has anyone had this done and if so… have you shaved and if so, did you shave it all off or trim short parts.
Don’t want to get too graphic here… just… I think i’m a bit embarrassed if I don’t do the right thing. I don’t know if they do things differently in different states, but i’m in New Jersey.
So is it a SUGGESTED thing to shave yourself down there or no? I read somewhere that they do it for you… well, so what… I wouldn’t want to see a full hairpiece down there. Less for them to do. But… I need thoughts from those of you women as to what you’ve done in this situation. To shave or not to shave… that is the question.

I have had various female surgeries as well as a C-Section and hysterectomy. I can tell you they have seen it all! Even if you shave down there, they will likely do it again just to be sure they got it all. Just relax and let them handle it. If they talk bad about you, it just shows their immaturity!
    Hope your surgery goes well!

You need to call your surgeon and find out if he wants you to shave or not for this. This is something the surgeon tells you not people on here. The surgeon give specific instructions and what he wants for a surgical prep.

well i work in the operating room setting.. and the answer is that NO they don’t snicker and make fun of you. they see that stuff every single day and nothing is new to them any more. if they are operating on you in that area, then they will shave you themselves if you don’t. the nurses shave people everyday and that’s not a big deal either. if you know that they are gonna do it, then you can do it yourself or let them do it for you. either way, it’s not a big deal.

Pubic hair is normal and natural and anyone who is laughing away at pubes is very foolish. Do what you are comfortable with. I would assume that if you needed to shave your pubic hair for this procedure, they would tell you!

Give the docs a break and do it yourself. If you are physically unable to do this, leave it for them to do. Obviously, if it would hurt the baby to go ahead and shave it yourself then don’t do it by all means.
Also, snickering or talking or gossiping about people’s pubic area is very unprofessional. You should probably mention what you heard from your friend and see if what they’ve said is true. It is sometimes best to get the real story from the real people, not from second-hand storytellers.

It is not suggested that you shave yourself down there… you may clip yourself like with an electric razor, but shaving creates micro cuts on your skin which give bacteria a port of entry and bacteria is the last thing you want near a surgery site. Hospitals don’t even shave patients anymore, they use a clipper.

No you cant it will hurt when it grows back

No, do not shave. First of all when the hair grows back it itches like hell. Second, your doctor friend is actually misbehaving very badly for a doctor telling your how they joke about patients. Simply ignore what she told you (my opinion) and just go have your surgery done, good luck.

YES!! Actually just trim WAY short, like with trimmers. I went in to have an ovary out and they came in while I was awake with trimmers and a dustbuster(swear to God) and said I could do it myself or she would. I was like why the dustbuster, she said to vaccuum up hair. I trimmed, she vaccuumed. Really bizarre, wish I had known, woulda done it at home!!

It’s not necessary to shave pubic hair before a hysteroscopy. Some nurses may think it’s unusual to see a woman with pubic hair because so many women do shave down there. You should probably try shaving the hair with a women’s electric shaver before your appointment, because the hospital might charge you $40 or more simply for having to shave your pubic hair. Hospitals charge for everything. I do know that a man has to be shaved before a vasectomy. I can’t think of any reason why a nurse would not shave your pubic hair before a hysteroscopy. It may not be necessary, but that doesn’t mean the hospital is not going to shave your pubic hair before the procedure. The only reason you should shave your pubic hair is because you think it will save you money. Click on this link below. It will give you more information about the procedure.
