Should You Include Hobbies And Interests In Your Resume When Applying To Graduate School(or Medical School)?

This Question From Medical Cartoons | 3 Answers

This is what I have under my hobbies and interests section of my resume:
-Played the piano for 9 years. Played at many recitals
-Plays golf for enjoyment
-Study of egyptology
-Excellent manga (japanese cartoon) artist
-Interest in asian popular culture including Korean dramas, Japanese manga and anime
When applying to medical school or gradute level institutions of higher education, will this type of hobbies section on my resume look too personal? Will the admissions committee even care? Should I cut this section off?

Professor_sue may know about PhD programs. MD programs are different. On your CV they want to know about what makes you an individual. That sometimes helps you during the interviews. But, of course, they still want to know about your professional stuff. So be prepared to talk about both. Don’t be shy. Sell yourself. Good luck

While these are fine for listing on an undergraduate application and can even help you stand out there, they look unprofessional on a grad/professional school application. The only hobby/interest things you should list are those that equate to service work (or research). If your study of Egyptology equated to a paper or research trip, do add that. Basically, go to a web site like University of Michigan or some other big school with lots of departments. Find the home page for the department of the kind of graduate program in which you have an interest– for instance, if you want to study sociology, go to the Sociology Department’s web page. Look at the graduate students link and then look for a link to students who are on the market. They will almost always have a c.v. (which is what you should start calling your resume, by the way– “curriculum vitae”) for each student. Look at these c.v.’s– they’ll be much longer and more “impressive” in terms of work experience than yours would likely be as you apply to enter grad school, but they provide a model for structure. If you want to succeed in entering a place, look like you already belong. Use one of these as your model. Look at the kinds of things they list and frame your experience accordingly. Use it as a map to figure out how to gain more professional experience, as well.
    Good luck!!

I wouldn’t remove it, just condense it. If you leave something to the imagination it raises the reviewer’s curiosity.
Play piano, golf, study egyptology, manga arts.
It is obvious that you are interested in these areas and it will show that you have interests beyond your studies.
