    Ironic isn’t it.
People who don’t live in the UK seem to think the NHS provides free care for all. How wrong they are!!
The only people who benefit from totally free care are those who recieve payments from the benefits system. If you work, have any savings, own your own property or have anything of value then you pay even after having paid into the NHS system all your working life.
The system has become a total joke. If you live in England or Wales you pay for care. If you live in Scotland it is free. In England and Wales you pay to park your car at the hospital. In Scotland it is free.
In England you pay £6.75 (about 14 dollars) for each item of medicine. In Wales it is free.
The NHS has the right to refuse treatment based on your lifestyle – even after you have paid into the system to recieve the care. At least with private medical care you have the right to recieve what you have paid for.
As far as I am concerned I would scrap the NHS tomorrow and introduce private medical care for all.
My mother in law is 83, owns her own home and has a few thousand pounds in the bank. She scrimped and scraped all her life to be in that position. If she has to go in to care the Government will sell her house and take her savings to pay for her care. Those who have saved nothing and own nothing will get it all for free. Then the Government wonder why people here would sooner spend what they have than save it.

I agree – this is pretty appalling. Long term elderly care in England has been largely privatised and is now in the hands of the social care sector, not the NHS. It is not health care, but social care, so the NHS has wiped its hands of the problem.
In Scotland, the rules are different – there you do get care provided by the state, but only once you have ran out of money.
I agree that this is completely ridiculous. Health care should be nationalised and provided by the public. Long term elderly care is health care, not social care.

But she is not paying for her healthcare.
She is paying for staying in a nursing home. There is a difference. Even if she can not pay, she will get healthcare. Unlike in the USA where she would get neither.
FACT – the USA spends more on healthcare per person than any other nation on the planet.
FACT – American kids are more likely to die before the age of five than they would be if they were born in a western country with universal healthcare.

  4. Medical Jokes: Korky

Idaho, most brits don’t think America or Americans are evil. stupid, big mouthed and big headed yes but evil no,the trouble with the British NHS is that it was designed to provide medical treatment for the British people, not taking into account the 10 million plus immigrants and the tropical and foreign diseases they bring in, if for an example we didn’t have to pay one interpreter to understand these immigrant’s the money saved would have covered the charges to support this old lady, the priorities in Britain are unfortunately geared towards the minority’s unless their British.

  5. Medical Jokes: Saundra N

No she is not having to pay for her medical bills. It would appear that this lady has to go into a residential care home. Hopefully some of the bill will be picked up by Social Services but the rest (unfortunately) has to be paid by the person needing a place in a care home. You have not thrown it in our faces because you are talking about different situations and organisations. Peace and love from the UK too!

“I was hoping to be here for two weeks after breaking my hip but I developed an infection and have been here for two years. I am not able to live in my home any more,” she told the Southern Daily Echo newspaper.
I’m right there with you! I thought Government run health care was supposed to make these kinds of decisions go away!

She doesn’t have to pay for medical bills.
She may have to contribute towards her accommodation.
