QUESTION:

I have not read his deal in detail, but would imagine that healthcare for everyone, would be a good thing, even though I am not for welfare. Most civilized countries have free healthcare.I have heard that Canada`s system is a joke though.

I mainly keep out of American debates on America, as it is often pointless to try to show you that other ways exist, and that the American way is not always the right way.
But on this, consider the following:
The poorest people in society are the ones most likely to feel any ecomonic downturn, their cost of living is always very much higher as a percentage of their earnings, therefore the access they have to healthcare is restricted.
The poorest people in any society are also the last to benefit in an ecomonic upturn as the base they operate from is lower, and often any benefit they gain from that upturn goes to pay debt accrued during a downturn.
Think, if you increase the income for someone with say $50 per week to live on by $1, that is a greater of income for them and is worth more than the same dollar paid to someone on $200 per week, sounds obvious, but it actually has a much greater impact than you realise.
This means that the poorest in society, who often form the majority of people in that society are the least likeliest to be be fit for work, and the most likely to suffer ill health and for longer periods.
By providing free healthcare in a downturn, you are preserving more of the income of the poorest in society, as they do not have the worry of becoming ill, and are effectively more productive.
They also gain financially, that extra $1, and so doing spend that extra dollar eslewhere, this increases supply and demand at a basic level for more people, simply 1 million people with an extra dollar each to spend has a greater overal impact than one man with $1m to spend.
Improving the fitness of the work force at this level also increases productivity as less working time is lost due to illness, increasing the amount of goods going to market and increasing the number of people able to buy those goods.
As for the state by state provision, that will see the poorest states get poorer, as they are less able to fund health care, and the richest states get richer widening the gap in spending and reducing the national spend as less people have more of the dollars to hand.
As for any increase in taxation that should level out, as more people become fit to work, and their earning capacity increases, this spreads the tax burden across a greater number of people.

Obama said that he would pay for half the cost of the Obama healthcare plan by taking that money from Medicare.
That means that Medicare will not be able to provide Medical Care for the elderly when they need it, yet the elderly have paid into Medicare all of their working lives so they would have Medical Care when they need it.
Obama said that hip and heart operations for the elderly are not cost effective for elderly people who are at the end of their useful lives.
Obama said that the elderly should get “end of life counseling” instead of Medical Care.
That is one of the main reasons why people are opposed to Obama’s healthcare plan.
Obama is taking Medical Care that the elderly have already paid for and is giving that healthcare away to someone else.
The elderly will be left without the Medical Care that they paid for when they need that Medical Care.

A complete overhaul might mean hundreds of thousands, if not millions of job losses in the private insurance sector, taxes will go up which is not something most American families want to deal with right now.
Personally, I’m all for universal coverage, but not NOW. When our economy is back on its feet, then it’s the right time. A lot of people will disagree and say the quality of care is worse in countries that have socialized medicine, but I think health care is something that is a basic human RIGHT, just like life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. How can somebody be happy if he’s not healthy?

The United States has the best health care system in the world, and Obama wants to change that.
If his Medical plan goes through, we will have to cross the border into Mexico for our medical care, it will take a year to find a doctor when you need one in the U.S.
With the medical care being rationed, many illegal medical care places and medications will pop up. This will be a dangerous thing for Americans also.

Many don’t believe the benefits will be worth the costs. Most of those against it already have their own health insurance and fear they will be forced to pay for the bulk of the health care for those who currently don’t have any, while at the same time seeing their own health care coverage deteriorate.

Because the reform proposals all cost too much money at the moment. It’s also extremely complex and political. It works in other countries because their culture and economy works way differently than the US.
It NEEDS to get done, but the current solutions are barely acceptable.

I’m Canadian, and though are system is far from perfect (wait times for certain tests, wait times in the E.R., etc.), it’s available to EVERYBODY. And for those of us who can’t or won’t wait for tests or operations, there’s always the U.S. – for a cost, of course : )

Do you really want to Government coming in between you and your doctor and your personal decisions? Look at Europe’s health care system, which ours will be close to–for God’s sake, they encourage seniors to die rather than seek medical treatment!

Why do people keep saying that this will be Free health care????
Anyway, I oppose it because it involves big government and big government limits my freedoms and choices.
And because I do not want my or my families health care rationed.

SIMPLE! It will not work and we the tax payers are already paying the price for health care programs, this is just another way of sneaking in a tax increase on those that don’t deserve it.

  12. lugnut on December 13, 2009 5:37 pm

That’s the catch nobody will step forward and explain the details in laymens terms as to how it will affect the average citizen! Why? cause they don’t know! Just buy the pig sight unseen. I think not!

  13. mayna_sm on December 13, 2009 6:09 pm

an excuse to take the little money we have left and give the government total control over us. the coverage is a scam.

  14. Brandon on December 13, 2009 6:53 pm

Because it will mean a tax increase for the middle class…. something Obama said would not happen.

  15. Charles R on December 13, 2009 7:44 pm

    Because it sucks!

  16. danrathe on December 13, 2009 8:42 pm

Because we’ve dealt with the DMV, Post Office and IRS. There are some things government can’t do.
