Why Is My Ferret Dragging Her Butt On The Ground?

This Question From X-ray Jokes | 5 Answers

She’s about 3 yrs. old, and around 3 months ago she had some hind leg weakness. The vet did x-rays and ran some tests, but could not find a problem, so they gave her some steroids. That helped a lot, but now she’s doing the butt thing. Any help is appreciated. Please no crude jokes. I’ve already lost 2 ferrets to lung cancer and I’m worried sick about my Sasha.

It may not be a muscular problem, could be something as simple as anal glands. If you take her to the the vets it will take a couple of minutes to rule out. Another thing to consider is worms, if she is out of date with worm treatment that could also be the cause. Hope this helps

Hello Kimme- is your sasha a pet store ferret, if so she probably has some internal disorders like with her adrenal glands some of the tests that are necessary are very expensive to get a true opinion on, she might have to stay on steroids the rest of her life- the other question i have is -are her rear legs dragging behind her or just her butt–if the legs are then its a more serious problem if it’s just her butt them she is cleaning it or she has worms and it itches- again return to the vet and make sure that the vet is ferret experienced get a other opinion if your not happy with your current vet.

Could be a blockage… Blockages are caused by ferrets getting the clumping litter or the crystal litter stuck up their -you know what-. You should never use these types of litter for ferrets! If she had weakness three months ago and you use clumping litter, that may be showing problems now because of her butt dragging before she got out of the litter box.
Blockages could also be caused by eating things they shouldn’t, like too many grapes or other fruits/vegetables, chewing on rubber things, eating blankets in the cage (I had one who did that), etc. Blockage is very dangerous and need immediate vet attention.
If you ferret is dragging for a prolonged time after pooping just a little bit of poop or pee- there could be a blockage.
If the poop is decent sized you could try a ferret laxative, like Marshalls Ferret Lax.
Could also explain the weakness- being very lethargic is also a sign of a block (well the blockage should shown up on an x-ray…i would think)

If the vet found no underlying health issues and you go back again and there is nothing either find a new vet or go with what the first said.
I have four girls and we call Misa “skids” because she’ll leave skid marks on the floor after using the litter box. All four do it, and they do not have worms. Its just something they do.
Its actually pretty common from my vet and from reading up on it for them to drag their little rear ends on the ground. Maybe you’ve just never seen her do it till now.
Our 4-6 year old girl had limb weakness and it was when we first got her. We thought it was adrenal or insulinoma but she’s fine now, and it wasn’t anything. We switched our foods and she is doing great on the new food, and most of that weakness disappeared
